BLOOMS, BUGS, BEASTS
Juror: Andrew Krieger
Gallery Talk: Thursday, June 18th, 7 pm (Third Thursday event)
For more than a decade, the Blooms, Bugs, Beasts exhibition has been a popular annual show at the Scarab Club. It is an annual all-media, juried exhibition with a theme of flowers, insects, animals, landscapes and seascapes.
Largely self taught, after attending some classes and then departing the Cleveland Institute of Arts, Andrew Krieger returned home to Detroit to make art and work as a carpenter. The physical nature of carpentry informed his artistic practice. Making sculptural forms out of wood and combining that with representational painting, he aims to create a feeling of connectedness and participation in the work, in essence, to rethink how we look at and experience painting. He has exhibited in Michigan and New York, and has received a grant from the Knight Foundation.
DENNIS ORLOWSKI: The Bravado of the Knight
Well regarded for his work as a muralist, Detroit native Dennis Orlowski began painting at age 14. He has pushed paint on canvas, walls, banners and even buildings and has learned technique and color through his training under the tutelage of several fine craftsmen and artists. His love of knights and their devotion to honor and fealty are seen throughout his work. Orlowski has over 100 visual narratives that speak to the history and of the people he has immortalized with his art.
Scarab Club is supported in part by awards from the Kresge Foundation,
Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Fred A. and Barbara M.
Erb Family Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
