Marsden Hartley’s name appears in textbooks of modern art due to abstract paintings he made in Berlin in 1914-15, a body of work that drew from Cubism and German Expressionism.  But, when Hartley died in 1943, he would never have imagined that his so-called German Officer series would be the primary reason he would be remembered.  Rather, he believed his legacy would rest on his images of his home state of Maine.  Tied to an exhibition that was featured at The Met Breuer from March to June 2017 and now on view until November 12 at The Colby College Museum of Art, this presentation addresses this surprising and complex inconsistency in Hartley’s place in the canon of modern art.
