The HistoryOriginally known as the Boar's Head Christmas Dinner during the nascent years of the Scarab Club, this tradition was modeled after so-called Henry VIII dinners. To inaugurate these celebrations the head of a succulent boar was paraded along with other tempting delicacies among the merrymakers.
For over a century Scarabs have gathered on the second Saturday of December to commune with fellow members and welcome new initiates, who are invited to meander among the tables as emissaries of Bacchus, pouring wine and becoming acquainted with their art loving comrades.
The Scarab Club is supported in part by awards from the Kresge Foundation, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Family Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
